"Echad" from the book of Numbers (Part 1)

  1. NUMBERS 1:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, on the first (echad) day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

Here, the word "echad" is used as an ordinal value.  It indicates the position of that day in a sequence of days.

Subtotal for Numbers: Echad as a union: 0, as a quantity: 0, as an ordinal: 1

  2. NUMBERS 1:18 And they assembled all the congregation together on the first (echad) day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls.

Here, the word "echad" is used as an ordinal value.  It indicates the position of that day within a sequence of days.

Subtotal for Numbers: Echad as a union: 0, as a quantity: 0, as an ordinal: 2

  3. NUMBERS 1:41 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Asher, were forty and one (echad) thousand and five hundred.

Here, the word "echad" is plainly used in listing the sum of the adult men of Asher.  It is used numerically, as part of a quantity, and does not indicate a union.

Subtotal for Numbers: Echad as a union: 0, as a quantity: 1, as an ordinal: 2

  4. NUMBERS 1:44 These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: each one (echad) was for the house of his fathers.

In English, the compound pronoun "everyone" means "all of the people."  The word "one" is sometimes used as a non-compound modified pronoun.  An example of this (which is also used in Numbers 1:44) is "every one," which means something like "every single person or thing."  The non-compound modified pronoun differs from the ordinary compound pronoun in that it places greater emphasis on the word "one."  That is, it places greater emphasis on the individual components of the group, and not on the group itself.  Therefore, when the word "one" is used as a non-compound modified pronoun in the English language, it has a numerical function.  In this verse, the word "echad" is used in this way:  as a pronoun with a numeric function, placing emphasis on each individual prince within the group of princes.  It says nothing of a union.

Subtotal for Numbers: Echad as a union: 0, as a quantity: 2, as an ordinal: 2

  5. NUMBERS 2:16 All that were numbered in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one (echad) thousand and four hundred and fifty, throughout their armies. And they shall set forth in the second rank.

Here, the word "echad" is plainly used in listing the sum of men in "the second rank."  It is used numerically, as part of a quantity, and does not indicate a union.

Subtotal for Numbers: Echad as a union: 0, as a quantity: 3, as an ordinal: 2

  6. NUMBERS 2:28 And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and one (echad) thousand and five hundred.

Here, the word "echad" is obviously used in listing the sum of men of the tribe of Asher.  It is used numerically, as part of a quantity, and does not indicate a union.

Subtotal for Numbers: Echad as a union: 0, as a quantity: 4, as an ordinal: 2

  7. NUMBERS 6:11 And the priest shall offer the one (echad) for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, and make an atonement for him, for that he sinned by the dead, and shall hallow his head that same day.

This is the first of two instances of the word "echad" in Numbers 6:11.  Two (turtledoves) are mentioned in this verse.  Is this a "unified" turtledove that is to be offered for a sin offering, or is it a single turtledove of the two?  Here, the word "echad" indicates a quantity, not a union.

Subtotal for Numbers: Echad as a union: 0, as a quantity: 6, as an ordinal: 2

  9. NUMBERS 6:14 And he shall offer his offering unto the LORD, one (echad) he lamb of the first year without blemish for a burnt offering, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish for a sin offering, and one ram without blemish for peace offerings,

This is the first of three instances of the word "echad" in Numbers 6:14.  Is a "unified" he lamb to be offered for a burnt offering, or a single lamb?  Here, the word "echad" indicates a quantity, not a union of lambs.

Subtotal for Numbers: Echad as a union: 0, as a quantity: 7, as an ordinal: 2
